For All the Single Mommas … Who Are Mother AND Father
I was raised by two single moms (at separate times) – Momma and Nanna. Here’s a photo of them both walking across graduation stage at Stanford, and another in the Rodin Sculpture Garden. #iamloved
It was a lot for each of them, in different ways.
Momma was taking care of her four siblings AND her own four kids.
Nanna was just getting by on a public inner-city teacher’s salary.
Both did their best to be both mother AND father, to me.
Tupac’s song, ‘Dear Momma’ says it best … lovin’ these lyrics:
When I was young me and my mama had beef
17 years old kicked out on the streets
Though back at the time I never thought I’d see her face
Ain’t a woman alive that could take my mama’s place
… You always was the black queen mama
I finally understand for a woman it ain’t easy tryin’ to raise a man
You always was committed, a poor single mother on welfare
Tell me how you did it, there’s no way I could pay you back…
With all the love my heart can hold…
